Steps Around the World
Even before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks focused America’s attention on conditions in Afghanistan, many people knew that women in that country were forced to wear burqas. The garment has fired the imagination of artists as a highly visible symbol of the oppression of women under an extremist Muslim regime. However, the outfit also bears a striking resemblance to the costume made famous by Martha Graham in her solo piece Lamentation.
It’s no wonder, therefore, that the burqa serves as an inspiration for a dance in the first concert of Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth’s season. The concert is entitled All Over the Map and takes international influences as its theme. The piece for a dancer in a burqa is called Azadia Entekhob, which are the Farsi words for “freedom of choice,” and it was choreographed by Lori Darley and Parisa Khobdeh for a Dallas fundraiser for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. The work is the centerpiece of their concert, along with the premiere of Kerry Kreiman’s Collision Course, a sextet set to the jazz music of Charles Mingus. Elsewhere, the Nova Dancing Company performs excerpts from Diverse Dances, Suite II. Gunild Pak’s Three in One is structured around Eastern philosophy. Jennifer Olson Graves’ Voices is a trio set to the guitar music of Leo Kottke. CD/FW’s next date in Fort Worth won’t be until next March, so you’d better catch them now.
