Ballet Afoot

Texas Ballet Theater kicks off its season this weekend at Bass Hall with a performance of director Ben Stevenson’s version of Romeo and Juliet. His take on the Shakespeare classic has never been seen in North Texas — and won’t be seen in Dallas. Apparently, audiences in Big D can’t keep pace with Cowtown’s. (It’s true: When Carlos Acosta, arguably the most exciting male classical dancer in the world, is brought in by TBT to dance the bravura pas de deux from Le Corsair later this year, he’ll perform one night in Dallas and three nights here.)
Opening night of Romeo and Juliet will see Julie Gumbinner and Lucas Priolo in the title roles. The two were married during the summer, which may give them fresh insights into the historic lovers. They dance both the Friday and Sunday performances. On Saturday night, the plucky young Brazilian Andre Silva will partner with Carolyn Judson in the same roles.
From its origins at the Houston Ballet, whence Stevenson came, this version of Romeo and Juliet features David Walker’s sets and costumes and will incorporate all 34 of TBT’s dancers as well as students from the TBT dance school. The Fort Worth Symphony will perform the remarkable Sergei Prokofiev score under the direction of Jack Buckhannan.
