Soaked in Schmaltz

Fort Worth Weekly recently took the Star-Turn-the-other-cheekagram and Fort Worth Business Press to task for catering to zillionaire Ross Perot’s Hillwood empire and then ignoring news that puts the company in a bad light. Both papers write articles whenever Hillwood hires a new executive, brokers a deal, or buys a goat at a stock show, but neither has mentioned that Hillwood marketing executive Tony Crème, 28, was arrested at Galatoire’s in the French Quarter after witnesses said he shoved an elderly arts patron to the ground in January and left him in a coma. The Star-T took our criticism to heart — not. On March 30 the daily printed a lengthy article on the Travel section cover under the headline “Let’s Deux Lunch,” about the boisterous restaurant “where a six-hour midday meal on Fridays is par for the wine-and-whiskey-soaked course,” yet didn’t mention the high-profile clash that was reported on web sites and in numerous newspapers around the country. The Star-T droned on about the boozing, table-hopping, and “giddy fun” where “you can witness social graces melting faster than an ice sculpture at a bayou picnic in July.” Vapid analogy aside, that could have been a fitting segue for one little sentence about Crème. Static is surprised the Star-T didn’t ignore the Kennedy assassination for a couple of months and then write a travel story about “Fun times in scenic downtown Dallas.”
