Tommy
Wisdom apparently accompanies the gray beard worn by HearSay’s boy-eee Tommy Alverson. Seems the cumulonimbi had glowered every time he tried to get a group of musicians together to play outdoors. So last year, he outmaneuvered the weather gods and moved his Family Gathering No. 5 to Glen Rose’s Tres Rios, a campground with a covered stage and seating area. (HA-ha.) The hope now is that No. 6 (Oct 9-11) is equally, ya know, pleasant. This year’s lineup is solid as a big chunk of, um, concrete (... or something). Original outlaws Rusty Wier, Steven Fromholz, and Ray Wylie Hubbard are mixed in between Michael Hearne and Cooder Graw on Thursday. Then, more than 30 bands will appear on Friday and Saturday, including Ed Burleson, pearl-snapped Deryl Dodd, little miracle Heather Morgan, Johnny Bush, crusty Chris Wall, Radney Foster, funny guy Cornell Hurd, and ragged but right Alverson. All That Jazz
HearSay doesn’t wanna hear shit from “y’all” about the dearth of jazz in the Fort — at least for now. Lovable Tad Gaither of Black Dog Tavern will be hosting a solid string of jazz dates this week, starting with Confus-a-Tron this Thursday. They’ll be swinging as much as a Miles Davis cover allows during the Fort Worth Poetry Slam competition. (Ah, ain’t nothing like a little jazz and some angry arty-farty types. It’s definite that Bill Parcells and his bad dye job will be a hot conversation topic in between the bleats and the beats.) Friday welcomes The Nelson Project to the boards. Bassist Brandon Nelson will play alongside Keith Wingate (guitar), Matt Lawlis (keyb’s), and Rum (drums). On Saturday, The Mike Arnold Jazz Trio will play, and on Sunday it’s the Michael Pellecchia gang for their regular weekly gig. A postscript: The JazzMonsters, an 18-piece big band, will be holding it down at the Black Dog the first Sunday of every month 5pm-7pm, perfect for you to groove to then get your ass to “Acoustic Mafia” at the Moon later in the evening. Cool? Cool.
You’re My Boy, Leroy
(Allow HearSay to pull a Malcolm Mayhew and point your attention toward an upcoming show that’ll be worth your time to see. A-hem ...) It’s about time: Leroy the Prophet’s new full-length, Applying Ockham’s Razor, is ready for the streets. The band is having a c.d. release party this Saturday at the Ridglea. Get a complimentary copy of Ockham’s Razor on entrance ($10 for 21 and up; $12 for underagers). Sharp, smart, and metallic, that’s the Leroy sound. Loaded Moses and The Immigrants are also on the bill.
