You know, everybody’s making a big fuss over the fact that Centro-matic’s been going steady for a decade, but what about Sub Oslo? Now based out of Austin but with roots in both Fort Worth and Denton, the eight-piece dub group hasn’t been nearly as prolific or as well-traveled as indie darlings Centro, but Paul Baker, John Nuckels, Quincy Holloway, Frank Cervantez, Brandan Uribe, Alán Uribe, Miguel Veliz, and Moses Mayo have managed to keep on keepin’ on since 1996.
Part live-PA outfit, part bedroom-studio trance project, and part something else again, Sub Oslo improvises a lot, has mastered the art of the totally chill epic soundscape, and isn’t afraid to rock out. Like forefathers King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and Lee “Scratch” Perry, the Texas octet begins with a stuttering, reggae-ish beat (the kick-snare accents of rock are transposed; the kick is struck in place of the snare and vice-versa). Over the top are painted gentle, brilliantly colored groove-lines from traditional instruments and stuff like theremins, laptops, vocoders, oscillators, and compressors.
This weekend, the Sub Oslo guys return to the scene of so many killer New Year’s Eve parties, the Wreck Room.
