Doing what it does best, Metropolitan Classical Ballet has assembled a medley of bravura show-stoppers for its spring program this week at Bass Hall. The only Russian-oriented company in the Southwest, MCB is bringing in Bolshoi-trained guest artists to join the company regulars.
Daniil Gaifullin of Ukraine and his wife Stephanie Murrish will dance the popular pas de deux from Don Quixote, and Olga Pavlova and Yevgeniy Anfinogenov, another husband and wife team, will perform waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier.
Company co-director Alexander Vetrov has also revived Inspiration, danced by himself and Pavlova to the music of Schubert, a ballet created for the two by MCB’s other artistic director, Paul Mejia, and seen here before. Accompaniment is by classical guitarist Silas do Espirito Antonio Santo. Anatoly Emelianov, who made a great impression in the title role of Spartacus last year, returns to dance the pas de deux from the rarely seen The Talisman with company regular Marina Goshko.
The program’s anchor is the second act of Raymonda along with the Grand Pas Classique from the same ballet staged by Vetrov and featuring him as the Saracen. Pavlova and Gaifullin also take solo roles, along with company regular Andre Prikhodko, who is scheduled to dance a solo Gopak.
Accompanying the program is the Texas Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Ron Spigelman, one-time associate conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony and now assistant conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic.
MCB’s performances make for the only time you’ll be able to see Russian-trained dancers in this special repertoire.
