That Nutty Met Ballet

Metropolitan Classical Ballet unveils its Nutcracker this weekend. Company co-director Alexander Vetrov’s version of the Tchaikovsky classic draws from Bolshoi Ballet’s signature production, in which Vetrov often appeared before immigrating to America.
The co-director will dance the magician, Drosselmeyer, in all four performances here. Vetrov’s young son Glen will dance Fritz, a role he has taken on before. “But,” Vetrov said. “I’ve added some jumps for him.”
The extraordinary Olga Pavlova will perform the Sugar Plum Fairy Friday and Saturday evenings, partnered by guest artist Gennadi Saveliev. Both are alumni of the Bolshoi Ballet. Saveliev, currently a soloist with American Ballet Theater, also co-directs, along with his wife, Larissa Saveliev, the Youth America Grand Prix, a competition for classical dancers 19 and under. The 2005 finals of the contest, offering more than $100,000 in awards, are scheduled for next April in New York’s City Center.
Two company regulars will alternate as the Sugar Plum Fairy for weekend matinees — Maria Kudyakova on Saturday, and Marina Goshko on Sunday. Andre Prikhodko will be partner to both. (Goshko has danced the Sugar Plum in previous seasons here and made it something of a signature role.)
Ron Spigelman, the company’s music director and former assistant conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony, will accompany, leading the Texas Chamber Orchestra in the pit. — Leonard Eureka
