Engine of the Ocean
A lot of great bands are slated to perform this weekend at “Experience the Art of Music,” the local cross-disciplinary cultural benefit/extravaganza now in its third year — Pablo and the Hemphill 7, Darth Vato, Horses, Chatterton, Alan, Collin Herring with John Price, and Velvet Love Box. But the two outfits that we Weekly staffers (OK, me and HearSay) are really gigged about seeing are the Me-Thinks and Engine of the Ocean. It’s just been a long time since we’ve seen ’em.
EOTO is fresh off a new demo recorded at First Street Audio, under the helm of producer Bart Rose. Around the heart and soul of David Maverick and Brian Wrinkle, chief co-songwriters, has recently formed a talented supporting cast of Brett Bledsoe (guitar), Mike Bratu (bass), and Robbie Dibble (drums). The Me-Thinks, bad-ass sludge-rockers, haven’t graced any local boards since fall. They’ve been working on a “double e.p.” Things haven’t been going swimmingly, but the boys remain positive. In November, they wrote on their web site, www.me-thinks.com, “We were working on ‘Speedhair’ the other night and recorded all the basic tracks. It was sounding really good and dirty until we lost all of the tracks. I know drinking and recording don’t necessarily go together, but in our case there is just no way around that. We have since re-tracked ‘Speedhair,’ and I think it came out even better than before. I guess everything happens for a reason.” Now that, boys and girls, is pluck!
In addition to all the groovy music, there will be some spoken-word performances, food, and visual art featuring the work of Greg Bahr, Ryan Brown, Amanda Fortenberry, Jesse Sierra Hernandez, Marianne Horn, James Lassen, Kate McDougall, and Doug Pike. — Anthony Mariani
