Rocking in Cervus
HearSay was cruising past the Aardvark on W Berry recently when your columnist noticed Aardvark doorman Mike motioning toward the club door. The message was that there was a good band playing. HearSay walked inside, and knew Big Mike was right after hearing only a few notes. The band: Cervus.
Tight musicianship, socially responsible lyrics, and the ability to shift tempos throughout a four- or five-minute song without losing the main thread of the tune brings on the Primus and Rage Against the Machine comparisons (which, of course, the Cervus boys welcome).
The foursome came together about six months ago — a hardcore funk-rock outfit that revolves around frontman/co-lead guitarist Nathan Shartz, whom bass player Paul Reid said was procured from an ad in the back pages of this mag. (“The first line in Nathan’s ad,” Reid said, “was ‘No Christians, please.’”) Look up “doughy boy-next-door,” and there’s a picture of Shartz, whose defining characteristic is his playing style, both hands atop the fretboard. Reid and the other two guys in the band, drummer Robbie Dibble and guitarist Brett Bledsoe, had been jamming as a trio for about three years, off and on, before getting hold of Shartz. The band, according to Reid, is now ready to maximize its potential. They play the Ridglea this Fri, the 13th, with 21 Fits and HearSay fave Loaded Moses.

Looks like the Tattoo Bar won’t be closing after all — but don’t go there expecting to see the bands that made the bar one of the few places around to see professional, serious metal. The bar’s under new management, and new management wants to turn the spot on ELancaster into something less black, more ... khaki. Good God is right ... There’s been a gem of a performer in our midst, and no one’s said a damn thing about him yet. Phil Pritchett is a guy who played the Nashville game for a while before figuring out that helping write stupid songs about drinking and carousing (for other artists) wasn’t what he wanted to do. He’s living in Fort Worth now with his family and playing the Moon on W Berry every Tuesday. Song to dig: HearSay doesn’t know the exact title, but if you go there and request the “Luke Skywalker/Indiana Jones” song, you won’t be disappointed ... BTW: Contrary to an off-hand mention in Hearsay’s column a couple weeks ago, Jasper Stone hasn’t broken up. Their frontman/guitarist recently damaged an index finger and wasn’t able to help the band finish recording its forthcoming record, but the band is still so happy together.
