NDSA Benefit

We like to think of the Wreck Room, that bastion of alterna-culture on West Seventh, as a cantankerous old drunk with a heart of gold. The Wreck will be showing its best face again this Sunday, when a benefit will be held for the National Disability Sports Alliance and Gary Ragland, a local NDSA athlete who has qualified for the 2004 U.S. Paralympic Games in Athens and who needs funding help.

The show’s the brainchild of localista Kathryn Thornton, who put on a similar bash at the Wreck for the Green Party back in Y2K. To support NDSA, an outfit which coordinates competitive sports for athletes with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and the like, she’s whipped up an eclectic mix of musos who’ll be performing on two stages throughout the day.

Blues/R&B/swing daddy James Hinkle, whose late-night visits to the Wreck to bestow gifts of barbecue chicken and crawfish are legendary, has a paying gig later in the evening, so he agreed to open the show. Jazz will be present in the form of Fred’s Café regulars the Brian Sharp 6, while jazzer Michael Pellecchia will do his solo singer-songwriter thang. The Flamenco Boys will provide hot-blooded Hispanic guitarismo. A “Celtic Trio,” led by a music critic from another Fort Worth publication, will play leprechaun music. Cadillac Fraf & the Mockingbird Cartel, Darrin Kobetich & Michael Padilla, and Scott Copeland & Scott Boland will play acoustic music, while Sally Majestic, Woodeye, and the mighty Goodwin will bring the rock.

The event, emceed by the ubiquitous Carey Blackwell of Fred’s, will also feature a raffle of goods and services donated by neighborhood merchants. The whole shebang sounds like a nice opportunity to support a worthy cause, hear some righteous tunes, and be reminded of what it means to be part of a community. — Ken Shimamoto
