The Show

By Anthony Mariani

There may be no better portrait of musical talent in Fort Worth and, to a lesser extent, Dallas and Denton than the new album by the project called Top Secret. A collection of 10 groovy, largely instrumental, ambient jazz tracks, ...shhh was built — Frankenstein-style — from the pre-recorded licks of more than 40 local musos. The record’s value comes not from the often appropriately serviceable playing but from the names attached to the performances. Some of North Texas’ finest young guns pitched in, including Dave Karnes (Dave and Daver, Dave Karnes Trio), Chris Hardee (Alan), Daniel Katsuk (Spoonfed Tribe, A-Hummin’ Acoustical Acupuncture), Frank Cervantes (Sub Oslo), Cooper Heffley (Maren Morris, Greater Good, Jeff Price, JJ & the Rogues), Joey Carter, Matt Hembree (Goodwin, Pablo and the Hemphill 7, The Underground Railroad), and Quincy Holloway (The Gospel Swingers, Sub Oslo), guys whose names will undoubtedly be remembered years from now.

In celebration of the vinyl release of ...shhh, Top Secret mastermind and former bassist for Pablo and the Hemphill 7 Marcus Lawyer is throwing a party at the Metrognome Collective, where a lot of Top Secret’s contributors will finally learn who played with whom. Lawyer plans on spinning the record and inviting the Top Secret contributors in attendance to try to recreate some of the vinyl magic onstage.

The biggest mystery is how any one of the musicians is going to be able to recreate music that he didn’t write but his instrument did.
