She wears the pants
Fort Worth Symphony supporters will gather Friday for the orchestra’s annual fund-raising concert in Bass Performance Hall. Instead of the usual instrumentalists, two top-drawer singers will headline.
Metropolitan Opera stars Frederica von Stade and Håkan Hagegård will offer excerpts from, among other works, Don Giovanni and The Merry Widow (in which they recently appeared together in New York). Von Stade, it may be remembered, sang on the Bass Hall inaugural program. She later described the auditorium as “the best hall I’ve ever sung in. It’s so easy. You just open your mouth and the sound floats out over the audience.”
For the last 25 years the mezzo-soprano has earned renown for her performances of “trouser” roles, looking sleek and natural as a young man in what some find a strange operatic convention — women singing men’s parts. With her light, dusky sound and impressive vocal agility, she has become her generation’s definitive Count Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier and the adolescent Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro.
Swedish baritone Hagegård is equally at home on recital as well as operatic stages. His German lieder programs are especially prized. Fort Worth Symphony music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct. —Leonard Eureka
