Spoonfed Tribe

By Matthew Smith

Familiar drill: another random club, people babbling, stage lights switching between (yawn!) blue and purple, singles in the crowd scanning for prospects while the faceless local band of the night drones background noise to a wall of indifference.

This is exactly what won’t happen at a Spoonfed Tribe show (though there may be many singles a-scannin’). Part concert, part happening, a Tribe event commands your attention. This symphony of a band weds jam rock with funk and gives rise to a Zappaesque world beat. It’s meant to shock you and keep you wanting more — a live soundtrack to your life.

Yes, there’s the hippie element involved, but the Tribeheads who turn out across the Southwest for the band understand that Spoonfed Tribe makes not only experiential music but music one can glean intellectual stimulation from. With two full-length albums and an EP to their name, Spoonfed Tribe plans on recording this fall a record that, according to Tribe elder Daniel Katsuk, will “change the course of history.”

Before that, the band will play Ridglea Theater. Expect an extravagant light show like the one that accompanied Spoonfed’s last performance there. Sounds fun, eh? Goofiness and showmanship aside, the band’s real calling card remains brilliant, hypnotic music

Fri at Ridglea Theater, 6025 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. 817-738-9500.
