Alt-rock bands: gotta love ‘em. And there sure are enough of ‘em around. But why, you might ask, would you go out to see something that sounds like the stuff that’s on the radio?
Fort Worth’s Loaded Moses provide a number of good reasons. Their sound, redolent of alt-rock standbys like Alice in Chains and Incubus, features the requisite two-guitar attack and groovin’ rhythm section. (Anybody else notice how much the general quality of rock drummers has improved in the last four or five years?) Their music runs the gamut from crushing heaviness to moody light-and-shade. But the real big news here is lead singer Alex Starr, a young buck who occasionally uses vocal processors to augment his pipes but hardly needs any help. Think of Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell if he didn’t gargle with razorblades. Who knows, with a few more front guys like this, hard rock singing (as opposed to screaming or growling) could make a major comeback.
With six years of honing their attack behind them, Loaded Moses appears to be poised for a breakthrough. Starr joined the band two years ago after a chance meeting at the county courthouse and helped to solidify their sound. The band, often seen in the company of their compadres Leroy the Prophet, released a three-song EP in 2000. More recently, they completed work on their first full-length c.d., currently set for an October release.
