A Thousand Points of Light

The last time HearSay saw a packed Moon was during the Reagan administration Ñ not really, but a long time ago, like when the Acoustic Mafia had the run of the joint. WeÕre talking months.
Well, last weekend, the place was back to its Acoustic Mafia-era crowd size, thanks to a twin bill featuring Kevin AldridgeÕs Chatterton and AustinÕs Oliver Future.
Both acts are long-time local faves, Aldridge with his former powerhouse of a band Brasco and Oliver Future as the Only Austin Band To Employ Two Ñ Count ÕEm, Two Ñ Native Fort Worthians, drummer Jordan Richardson (Horses, formerly of Soviet Space) and guitarist Sam Raver.
Chatterton is taking off, though you wouldnÕt have known by the performance. The only suggestions of Chatterton were in the bandÕs flyers posted around the room and in the lyrics. Everything else screamed Brasco. You know BrascoÕs signature sound Ñ round up as many guitar players in the neighborhood as you can, plug Õem all into hot amps, crank out the rawk. The only thing different from this performance and BrascoÕs last show, at the Wreck Room about a year ago, was a finale in which frontman Aldridge smashes his guitar off the stage and suffers a head wound from a splintering piece of wood. Yes, this Brasco-ish energy is a good thing.
While Brasco was loud but solid, Oliver Future Ñ though tastefully melodic and rockish Ñ was mostly just plain loud, sometimes past the point of simple annoyance. The brunt of the blame has to fall on frontman Noah Lit, who sang into the mic in his Broadway-ish belt over quiet moments, as if 30,000 hearing-impaired senior citizens had crowded atop an oceanside crag to hear him. Dude, pull away some. This ainÕt Sixth Street.
