Mardi Gras bash

Now that New Orleans is on the road to recovery, celebrating the Krewe of Kowtown’s annual Mardi Gras “costume ball and social gathering” won’t seem so ... decadent.

Every year for the past 14, bluesman James Hinkle and his informal social group have thrown a party on Fat Tuesday just ‘cause. Guh-tarman extraordinaire Hinkle will be joined this year by some familiar faces, including Holland K. Smith, Gunzy Trevino, and Christian Dozzler, plus Andrew “Junior Boy” Jones, a native Dallasite who’s worked with Freddie King, Johnnie Taylor, and Charlie Musselwhite, among others. Before creating his own label, GalexC Records, a couple of years ago, six-string-slinger Junior Boy recorded for the legendary Chicago-based label, Alligator Records, and, on King’s Larger Than Life album (1974), RSO. He’ll make a nice fit, considering the murderer’s row of ax virtuosity on display.

Ever since Hinkle stopped playing in N’awlins-based Marcia Ball’s band in the ‘80s, the Fort Worthian has been throwing every ounce of himself behind his event, and you gotta tip your hat to him. With a lotta beads and a lotta booze, Krewe of Kowtown’s is the most “authentic” pre-Lenten get-together in town.

7pm-2am on Tue, Feb 28, at Longhorn Saloon, 121 W Exchange Av, FW. $10. 817-740-9477.
