Standing Up for West Ex
To the editor: I have just finished reading Jeff Prince’s article (“New Blood in the Old Yards,” Dec. 12, 2007), and I must admit I resent the investor group being called “the free-spending West-Ex bunch.” As an investor in West Exchange, I drive two hours every day to come to Fort Worth. I have continued to work even after the closing of the clubs to help reorganize what was not completed properly by Spencer Taylor and have recently reopened the karaoke bar under a new name — Cutter’s Saloon. My staffers worked for the club before, and their dedication is unsurpassable. They have cleaned, painted, moved equipment, and worked long, hard hours to get the club open again.
Spencer’s flash has not turned out to be a “flash in the pan” — the efforts that were made by everyone involved helped to clean up the Stockyards in a way that no one individual could do. It had become a hangout for gangs, drugs, and crime. There is talk about trying to organize a committee to once again have Pioneer Days. I don’t know where you obtained all of your information, but the club owners I have become friends with on West Exchange are a nice group who want the same things that I feel everyone does for the area — a historic place that we can all be proud to show off to tourists and fellow Americans!
Next time you feel the need to write an article about the Stockyards, make sure you give everyone the opportunity to bring forth information and not just slam those of us who are still hanging on, working to revive the West Exchange and this historic area.
