Eric and Mike Reyes

Two guys: One snappy drummer, one crazed organist. One sound: funky goth. That’s Fort Worth’s Sonic Death Monkee.

Eric and Mike Reyes boldly go where no band has gone before, overlaying accomplished and melodic keyb work over beats that you just can’t help but bob your head along to. Goths can dig the groovy parlor vibe, while funkstars are enjoined to shake their wigs to the up-tempo jivery. As part of the Metrognome Collective (along with Southpaw Preachers, Clint Niosi, and heaven is a hotel), Sonic Death Monkee upholds the storied tradition of yesteryear’s freaks, from The Legendary Stardust Cowboy to Corn Mo. SDM’s humor -- while palpable -- never infects their brilliant technical virtuosity. Songs are long. There are no lyrics. And the sight of these two arty types hunched over their instruments like mad scientists is a car wreck of cuteness. The boys are from Fort Worth, and, according to their web site, they "practice for 25 hours a day," count among their influences New Kids On The Block (cool), Winger (awesome), Avril Lavigne (breathless sigh!), and Blink 182 (yuck), and, of course, they hate the number seven. Having them open for local death metalists Cadillac to Mexico and the well-rounded Signal 13 this Saturday at the Aardvark should make for quite a nutso evening.

Sat at the Aardvark, 2905 W Berry St, FW. 817-926-7814.
