Faux Fox

Really good shows are set to go all over North Texas this weekend, starting tonight (Wed.) with Faux Fox at Hailey’s.
One of a few North Texas bands that takes ridiculously serious New Wave not too seriously, the long-time Denton five-sometimes-six-piece is almost as good in person as on c.d. (even though they haven’t been gigging as often as they used to). Both of their discs, Black Glove or White Glove and Cusp of the Precipice, are sonic snapshots of nerdy liberal arts majors jamming their tongues in their rouge-covered cheeks. The heavy, fuzzed-out electric bass harks to Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen. On the keyboards you’ll hear Stereolab in the juxtaposition of loud, stout rhythm lines that are really nothing more than two alternating notes and bright, echoing, fleeting lead riffs. And frontman Julius Preston Boothe’s cold, monochromatic voice is a neat interpretation of Wang-Chung’s Jack Hues doing an impersonation of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. Yes, Faux Fox rocks.
On Saturday, Hailey’s opens its doors to Spune Productions’ Back2School Special Jam-Show-Bash, featuring Auto Escape, [daryl], The Numbers Twist, The Hourly Radio, Black Tie Dynasty, Red Monroe, Experimental Aircraft, The Angelus, The Black Angels, Stella Maris, Belafonte, and The Deathray Davies, who are also scheduled to play on Friday at the Wreck Room with pretty much the hottest (no pun intended) new band, The Burning Hotels. Even though the indie darlings are barely a month old, here they are, opening for one of the Metroplex’s longest-running and most beloved underground rock groups. The Hotels are also in the process of recording, and their next show won’t be until Feb. 24, at the Aardvark, with Deathray and Black Tie Dynasty. (Killer line-up.)
Back up in Denton, prodigal son DJ Nature continues his recent take-over of Wednesday nights at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, where on Saturday another one of Faux Fox’s fellow prodigal bands will be performing, old-school punks The Charismatics. Their most recent disc, Bad Blood, came out in August, and it’s a six-song e.p. that’s heavy like Fugazi but full of rapid-fire crash like the best hardcore metal.
Back here in Cowtown, Saturday belongs to Spoonfed Tribe at the Ridglea Theater, where some of the rocking jam band’s performance will be recorded for release on a forthcoming live c.d.
