Bronco Bowl

Garbage popped onto the radio airwaves — and into our consciousness — late in 1995 with their catchy, seductive rock that simply reached out and grabbed us by the ears. Loved for hits like “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl,” the band — lead by frontwoman Shirley Manson — established a signature techno-modern pop-rock sound that has remained constant even as the band has matured.
With last year’s release, Beautifulgarbage, the group reached deeper into its influences, pulling in electronica, hip-hop, art rock, and even a touch of Spector-style ’60s magic to create what is arguably the act’s best effort to date. More Blondie than Britney, Manson is rough around the edges with a hard-as-nails center, although she shows fleeting shades of sweet vulnerability, as on the new song “Drive You Home.”
Even though the pop is always polished, Garbage stops short of being slick. Beneath its gleaming veneer, the music reveals scuffs and scratches that keep it from being boy-band perfect and, instead, let it just be what it is: smart, sexy, tough music whose makers never need to resort to in-your-face antics.
