Watchdog Journalism?
Okay, we’ll confess to the obvious. When we get the chance to stick a frog gig in our daily competitor, we do so with relish. And the opposite is true to a degree. If the 50-cent daily sniffs our delightful scent on a story, it’ll sometimes try to serve up its own down-and-dirty version a day or two in advance of our deadline. While Calftown’s daily doesn’t often write about us, we frequently get snitch reports of the less than charitable things they say about us. This is a normal — even healthy, perhaps — byproduct of competition that gives truth a fighting chance. So maybe that’s what the rack suits at 400 W. 7th were thinking when they published a story Tuesday about an informal arts class held in one of the city’s “secret places.’’ The only thing secret about the “concrete-floored downstairs of a building just on the edge of downtown,’’ however, is that the Star-Telegram didn’t reveal that the space is downstairs from the Weekly’s posh, state-of-the-art headquarters. For the record, that address is 1204 West 7th St. If you know of other “secret’’ stories the daily is keeping to itself, stop by or give us a call at 817-335-9559.
