Actors Out Alone
In its latest incarnation, Fort Worth’s experimental theater collective SceneShop turns its spotlight on single and singular characters. The four short pieces being performed by the troupe this weekend are each centered on one character.
Two of them are dramatic monologues. Kim Smith performs her own Gaining June Joy Hunnicutt, an essay on a woman’s personal growth. Neil Stewart, a Fort Worth native who’s now the artistic director of a theater troupe in New York, portrays a character with the fearsome name of Tyson Spinks in I Tell You What, a piece by Austin writer Robert Elrod.
The other short plays are Bob Francis’ The Last Dime, about a reporter writing his grandfather’s obituary as an excuse to look into a mythic story in the family’s past, and Steven McGaw’s Stung, about an educator’s fall from grace. (McGaw has been a major force behind SceneShop since its 1996 debut. His full-length play landscape with stick figures, which grew out of a SceneShop installment and has been performed for Fort Worth audiences, will receive its official world premiere next year at Stark Raving Theatre in Portland, Ore.)
In addition to his performance in I Tell You What, Neil Stewart will also run an improv comedy workshop on Wednesday evening, so those wishing to brush up their skills will want to take part.
