Spector 45
It’s one thing watching grown men rockabilly, quite another their sons. Spector 45 is quartet of young, young Dallasites reared on greasy cars, upright bass guitars, and fast women. The boys have been together for a few years and are now playing everywhere, daddy-o, in support of their new e.p., the appropriately titled Girls, Cars & Rock n’ Roll! A chopper of slappy monster beats overlaid with clinky buzz-saw guitars and hi-fi rollerama, it’s the sleeper of the summer of ‘59.
Save the occasional burst of inspired crash and strum, the five-songer hardly holds a candle to their live shows — tornados of sound that, as with most rockabilly/rock of the tiny-fingered variety, blot out decorum and restraint. On a poorly recorded cruise in a “45 GTO,” the boys prove they can get as rough and raw as ‘hide, but there’s no comparison to watching a band like this rough up time signatures, timbres, and melodies under stage lights. The hidden track, a doo-wop-inflected something, crystallizes Spector 45’s burgeoning reputation as snot-nosed reactionaries while giving them foamy beer mustaches. — Anthony Mariani
