Centro-matic
By Justin Press
Say what you will about Centro-matic, but they’re still one of the hardest working bands in the country and thus deserve every accolade that comes their way. Having released about a half-dozen full-length c.d.’s and numerous e.p.’s, the four guys in Centro (as they’re collectively known in shorthand) don’t just sit back and count the beer money that comes a-tricklin’ in. When they’re not touring the States and Europe, the Dentonites are working on their own individual projects — drummer Matt Pence is a noted producer, and frontman Will Johnson has a formidable solo career. Still, when they are on the road, they’re playing their asses off. The zillions of gigs are probably what have made Centro so incredibly tight, capable of segueing from a harrowing back-roads ballad to a brain-crushing power-pop rocker as effortlessly as changing a channel, everything sewn together by Johnson’s almost disinterested yet powerful vocal delivery and the sterling musicianship, rounded out by multi-instrumentalist Scott Danbom and bassist Mark Hedman.
While so many other North Texas bands — no matter how much more you may have loved them — have gone the way of the dinosaur, Johnson et al. have managed to stay together for nearly a decade. The band defies the notion that a decent, hard-working rock outfit can’t survive without national radio airplay, a cover on Rolling Stone, or the imprimatur of Dave Matthews.
When Centro comes to town this weekend, the band will be celebrating the release of its latest and quite possibly best full-length, the apocryphally named Fort Recovery. Expect to see the c.d. on record store shelves in early March.
