Christian Lindberg and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
Besides being an emerging conductor and composer, and besides having a name similar to the author of this column, Christian Lindberg is generally recognized as the world’s foremost classical trombonist. The native of Stockholm came to his instrument through jazz, which showcases the trombone far more than the limited classical repertoire does. However, Lindberg’s virtuosity has done its part to remedy the inequity. A case in point is one of the pieces he’ll be playing with Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra this weekend. The wildly eclectic and ferociously cerebral Italian composer Luciano Berio wrote his startling and exceedingly difficult Solo for Trombone and Orchestra expressly for Lindberg three years ago. Along with this relatively new piece, Lindberg will be playing something centuries older: Leopold Mozart’s Trombone Concerto in D major.
In the other half of the program, Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct Mahler’s First Symphony, nicknamed “The Titan.” Most of the composer’s distinctive traits are on display in this early work: The first movement’s pastoral birdcalls give way to the peasant dance of the second movement. The irreducibly weird third movement features a minor-key version of the song “Frčre Jacques,” played as a somber funeral march that’s interrupted by clownish outbursts from a tinny brass band. The heavy-artillery finale brings things to a stormy conclusion. Mahler’s understanding of musical form is so great that he can pull these widely disparate elements together and form a work that makes sense.
