The Show
Burden Brothers
By Anthony Mariani
Pity the local bike enthusiast. Not only have he and his partners been run off essentially every club parking lot in town, they’ve also been ignored by local festival producers. There are about a half-dozen music events for people who’re into skateboards, but unless you count those Sundance Square shows sponsored by either one of the classic rock radio stations, the local biker is stuck with haunting these North Texas byways with only the hum of his motorcycle engine as his “music.”
Not anymore. From what began last year as a one-day bike/custom car show with bands, the Fort Worth Weekly Spring Rally has expanded into a two-day affair that, while still devoted to bike/custom car culture, is also open to bike/custom car lovers’ friends, folks who for whatever reason may not “get” psychobilly. On a bill of groups capable of conjuring the bouquet of burning rubber — High School Caesar, Flametrick Subs, Bottle Rockets, Devil Doll, The Susans, Spector 45, Hotrod Hillbillies — are some bands whose music probably appeals to, y’know, less testosterone-addled music lovers, outfits like Vallejo, the cut*off, The Record Hop, The Mermaid Purse, The Me-Thinks, Dirt Blazers, and James Hinkle.
Both days’ headliners also have mainstream appeal. The Smithereens, they of the ‘90s-era hits “Girl Like You” and “Blood and Roses,” cap Saturday night’s festivities, while on Sunday, North Texas’ own Burden Brothers will shut it down. Proceeds will benefit the North Texas Historical Transportation Inc., Bikers Against Child Abuse, and the American Red Cross. Tickets are available through www.frontgatetickets.com. — Anthony Mariani
