Finger on the Problem

To the editor: Job well done by Peter Gorman on the “Leaving Johnson County” story (Nov. 8, 2006). Part of the headline said that “Politics make a pretty part of North Texas a hell for bad kids, poor people, and anyone caught up in the criminal justice system.” You forgot to add the phrase “any citizen” to that statement.

You may find the “cronies” in Johnson County politics writing in to say “shame on you,” “leave our small county/town politics alone,” and all kinds of crap they are told to say. Johnson County is full of “cronies” who hold political office.

Unfortunately, the citizens are the ones who keep re-electing these idiots to office. However, there’s not much you can do when sheriffs, county clerks, county commissioners, and county judges are all basically hand-picked before the election even takes place. “They” take any means necessary to get their people in office. Whether by belittling an opponent, public slander, political distancing, or moving a polling place on the eve of Election Day, anything will be done. It’s not just local either. It goes all the way to some folks in the Texas Legislature.

To the editor: Someone forwarded me your article on Johnson County. Well done! I worked for the county jail from 1991 to 1995, and you put your finger on the problem. Excellent article.

Too Cruel to the Crüe

To the editor: Just had a chance to read your preview of the Crüe/Aerosmith show that was posted on the Crüe web site, and I’d like to simply ask you a question:

Is it not OK for those of us in our 30s to see our old heroes live in concert, especially now that we have the money and ability to go to a show like this? Your preview really puts people down who have a love for their pasts. For me, the Crüe show I saw in Toronto, Canada, was an amazing experience. It was my first Crüe show and the first concert to which I could afford premium tickets. Yes, the two bands have aged; yes, I’d love to see the Crüe do more new stuff (beyond the two new songs on last year’s Red, White and Crüe album); but no, the show isn’t a cash grab. It’s a chance to enjoy something great, something special, and something fun. The two bands were kick-ass at the Toronto show. These were incredibly well-practiced, full-scale extravaganzas with outstanding musicianship and showmanship and certainly not, as you suggest, “living jokes.”

Too bad your preview didn’t consider that music is about our lives, and our lives are about our memories. My memories were brought back at the concert, and new ones were made. You did a disservice to the general readership of your article when you failed to credit the importance of our pasts and our enjoyment of them.

To the editor: As a fan of Mötley Crüe and Aerosmith, I am shocked that you would allow the printing of such a terrible and crude story on these two bands. I understand that people are entitled to their opinion, but this is just pure stupidity. It looks like it was written by a 16-year-old for a high school paper. Anthony Mariani needs to show a little respect for two bands that have remained successful, in a business that is unforgiving, for over three decades. I mean, he states in one sentence that Mötley Crüe “hasn’t cut an album of original material since the 1980s.” This is 100 percent incorrect.

Both of these bands have a large following with all different ages. I myself am 25 years old. Mötley Crüe and Aero were popular way before my time. But when I attend the concerts (and I have attended a lot of MC concerts), you see all different ages. We deserve more than to hear that our band “sucks.”

Maybe Mr. Mariani would prefer bands like Panic! at the Disco, but I do not. You can be critical of things without being ugly and disrespectful. I will be awaiting your apology to myself and all the other MC and Aero fans who are very upset about this story and heard about it on a Mötley Crüe fan message board. I wouldn’t be surprised if you get more pissed-off Crüe fans writing you on this same subject.

Hot on the Street

To the editor: Regarding the Sept 13, 2006, article that ran under the headline “Hotseat for Hicks”: I just got through reading it, and I think it is a great job that y’all do for the community. You let the people know that we need to keep tabs on our elected officials, to know what is going on in our community.

You know, one thing I like about Fort Worth Weekly is y’all keep it street. Keep up the good work.
