Suffering from seasonal depression? We may have an antidote. Ex-Tripping Daisy frontguy Tim DeLaughter and his relentlessly uplifting “choral symphonic pop band,” the Polyphonic Spree, hold their 3rd Annual Holiday Extravaganza this Friday.
Back in September at the Gypsy Tea Room, the Spree — all twentysomething of them, including a thereminist, a harpist, and a full 10-person choir — took the stage to the pre-recorded strains of an orchestral version of “Hey Jude.” An appropriate choice, since Polyphonic Spree’s music resides in about the same territory as the Beatles’ at their most sing-along utopian. The Spree’s popular in the U.K., too — having visited there a couple of times last year, they’re heading back in late January for three weeks of dates.
A Spree performance starts off at an energy level that most bands would be happy to finish at, and it spirals upward from there. With their flowing white robes and dancing, prancing, head-bobbing stage trip, the Spree members come across like a production of Godspell as performed by the Muppets. DeLaughter sings and conducts the band like a hippie evangelist, with lots of grand gestures, his eyes continually focused heavenward. Confronted by such non-stop good vibes, beaming faces, and positive lyrics, the jaded cynic in me kept reminding the rest of me not to drink the electric Kool-Aid, but ultimately it was impossible to avoid getting swept up in the tide of good feelings.
While they might not levitate the building, they’ll at least raise the spirits of the people within it.
