The Promise of New Leif
Until a few years ago, the only notable instrumentalist from the country of Norway was the wonderfully named 19th-century violinist Ole Bull.
All that changed, though, when Leif Ove Andsnes came on the scene. The 34-year-old native of Karmoy has won over huge sections of the classical music world with the spontaneity, sparkle, and warmth of his pianism, underlaid by a deep understanding of musical structure. His recordings include a miraculously idiomatic reading of Rachmaninov’s Third Concerto and a foray into Mozart’s concertos that was as unexpected as it was widely acclaimed.
He’ll be playing a wildly colorful program, opening with Schubert’s lively and technically demanding Piano Sonata No. 17. He’ll also perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, a suite based on the paintings in an art show attended by the composer. The pieces of the suite range from the stately “Promenade” to the grotesque “Baba Yaga” to the humorous “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks” to the monumental finale “The Great Gate of Kiev.” The other item in the recital is Bent Sørensen’s The Shadows of Silence, a work by a Danish composer that Andsnes will play for us a mere six days after giving the piece’s world premiere at Carnegie Hall.
