The Danes
The Danes are proof positive that you can go home again.
Back in the summer of 2001, they folded the tent to pursue other ventures after playing together since ’96, when they were still attending high school in the Dallas ’burbs. Guitarist Andy Myers became Steve Duncan’s foil in The Chemistry Set, a band that never ceases to surprise, recently upping the energy quotient of live shows and overlaying exquisite guitar harmonies on charming, quirky psych-pop. Danes drummer Jared Jackson served time with the Audiophiles, Cowtown’s late, lamented princes of shoegazerdom.
In June of 2002, the quartet that’s the Danes decided to regroup. Within a couple of months, they’d signed with busy booking agent Lance Yocom of Spune Productions. Since then, they’ve been treading the boards around the Metroplex with a particularly rockist brand of spacey pop. The guitars wielded by frontman Brandon Carr and Myers alternate between shimmering, crystalline textures and thunderous rock crunch. Tim Cooper, on board since 2000, fills out the sound with yeoman work on bass and keys, while Jackson propels things nicely with his primal bash and thump.
The boys’ll be busy this weekend: After a Thursday gig at Rubber Gloves (with Super Love Attack and the interestingly named Bring in the Satellites), the Danes will take the stage at the Liquid Lounge in Deep Ellum alongside Bring in the Satellites and Spune stablemates the Snowdonnas in the first installment of KTCU/88.7-FM’s “Good Show” Christmas showcase. On Dec. 5, Myers will do double duty when the Danes raise the roof at the Wreck Room on another “Good Show”-sponsored bill that also includes The Chemistry Set, Blueprint Sea, Henry Holt, and Raised By Tigers. — Ken Shimamoto
