All the News That’s Fit to Pit
The Fort Worth Weekly, like most alternative newspapers, relies to some degree on revenue from adult ads (“News Flesh,” April 4, 2002). Static, therefore, seldom preaches about other folks’ use of sex to sell their products. Major daily newspapers — encouraged by the (slowly) growing numbers of women in their management ranks — tend to shy away from that ploy. However, the urge apparently was too strong when The Dallas Morning News set up its promotional booth at the Texas Motor Speedway recently. Since they couldn’t resist the cheap thrill, Static can’t resist pointing it out.
The presence in public of the “Dallas Morning News Pit Girls” — models wearing jog bras and short shorts — was no joke to staffers at the Belo flagship paper. Sources at the paper, who asked not be named, said female photographers were upset and that some of their male colleagues in the newsroom were equally incredulous.
“It’s disappointing that anyone in our company would think of something like that,” one woman staffer said.
When Static’s photographer took their pictures, the models were wearing (skimpy) jackets over their bra tops. Since a DMN exec did not return a phone call, Static isn’t sure whether the cover-up was due to the cool and rainy day or the News’ belated reaction to in-house outrage.
