To the editor: I am reading your story on polygamy (“They Do, They Do,” May 30, 2002) and an interesting thought just occurred to me: Men always want more than one wife, but I never hear of women asking for additional husbands. ... Wait — I wrote that before I had read the entire article. Apparently there are some women who don’t have enough dirty underwear and socks to wash.

To the editor: I wanted to take a moment to applaud your article on the City of Arlington and its glaring failures (“Got Those Blue-Collar Suburb Blues,” June 6, 2002). My husband is from Arlington and I have been a resident for eight years. We would agree that there has been a definite decline over the years.
We were unfortunate enough to move into a north Arlington suburb built by Mr. Adlai Pennington, owner of Texas Greatroom Homes and Prism Homes. I am the president of our homeowners’ association and have been begging and pleading for city officials to help us make Mr. Pennington make good on promises and complete the neighborhood pursuant to the plans he filed with the city. However, Mr. Ed Dryden, assistant building official, told me that we had fallen through the cracks, and no one bothered to do an inspection or see that the requests made by the City Council were carried out prior to approving his plan.
We are left in what is supposed to be a gated community without a gate, with a substandard fence, streets that are graded incorrectly, lots that are graded incorrectly, and many broken promises. Naturally, the residents never imagined such a nightmare for what we thought was an “upscale” community.
I wrote the mayor twice before I received a response. His comments supported the city staff and hinted that he had spoken with the developer and that perhaps we were at fault. The first time I wrote, I only received responses from council members Capehart, McCollum, and Bruner. None followed through or made any real attempt to help as far as I could tell. The second time I only heard from the mayor when I wrote to them regarding our plight.
Sometimes when you are fighting a battle, it seems you are alone. I was delighted to see confirmation in print that the problem is prevalent and not as isolated as the mayor and council would have us believe.

To the editor: Just a note to tell Betty Brink what a great story she did on Holt Hickman (“Dude Wrangler,” May 23, 2002). We really appreciate it. He is so generous to everyone. When he hired us, he said, “I don’t care if Billy Bob’s turns a profit; I just want it to be open, because it’s good for the economy and tourism in Fort Worth.”— !!!
