Gift Horses

It’s pretty much common knowledge to anyone involved in local music that young Jordan Richardson is a frickin’ monster — he plays drums in the TCU jazz band and Soviet Space, and is now leading a Brit-pop group (comprising non-Britons, of course) called Horses. Now, not to take anything away from Soviet Space and their exquisite punk, but Horses is the real deal and unlike anything going on in Cowtown at the moment. The sound is of shimmering guitar riffs, Beach-Boy-esque vocal harmonies, funky Rhodes lines, and the occasional flugelhorn blare. “Happy” wouldn’t begin to describe the Horses’ vibe: It’s like learning that you’ve won the Lotto the moment your above-ground pool full of Shiner is installed.

The scary thing is that these guys can only get better. They’ve performed as a full band just two times since forming a couple of months ago. The goal, according to Richardson, is to continue performing and record an e.p. soon to help get the word out. With graduation in his back pocket, Richardson will have more than enough time to work a couple of stellar bands at the same time — and scare the living shit out of any other musician his age.

Groovy B-Day

Big shout out to the Dave and Daver crew at the Moon. It’s been one year since drummer “Diamond” Dave Karnes and Dave “Sax Machine” Williams began flooding the groovy confines of the Moon with jazz every Wednesday night. Their birthday bash last week was probably their best gig yet, thanks to a bunch of sitter-in’ers that HearSay and the other bar regulars probably never heard before there. Good, good stuff.

As for the future of Dave and Daver: Their ad hoc group might actually be turning into something more solid. The band played four originals last week, and Karnes says that he, Williams, bassist Brandon Nelson, and multi-instrumentalist Chris White might actually begin rehearsing once a week. Putting together a c.d. of some of their live tunes might also be on the boards. If you wanna hear quality jazz in a comfy spot, the Moon on Wednesday nights might be the best place in town.

Overload!

To paraphrase Matt Day, Wreck Room barback: The weekend of May 16 will be like a Kung-Fu marathon without the Kung-Fu. Here’s just a sample of what’s going on: Our Weekly Music Awards (May 18), with Flickerstick, John Price, Latin Express, and Pablo & the Hemphill 7; the Cowtown Music and Art Festival (a.k.a. Fred Fest), with James Hinkle, Honchie, Daniel Katsuk, and Darrin Kobetich; and “The Honda Civic Tour,” with a bunch of useless, mall-punk bands that appear in Rolling Stone every other week. HearSay says check out Cowtown Saturday all day and Sunday afternoon, hit the Weekly gig ($6, $5 with canned food) later on Sunday night, and blow off the mall-punk. Cool? Cool.
