Lowell Liebermann
As part of our ongoing quest for performances of classical music by composers who aren’t dead, we direct you to the latest Cliburn at the Modern concert going on this Wednesday. Two years ago they brought in Ned Rorem for his birthday celebration and scored a brilliant success. This year, they hope to do the same with Lowell Liebermann. The New Yorker who acts as composer in residence for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra turns 45 with a concert and lecture at the Modern. One of an entire generation of composers reacting against the academic excesses of the late 20th century, Liebermann writes large-scale works that are harmonically spicy but easily digestible thanks to his gift for long-limbed, soaring melodies and lush orchestration.
The composer will serve as a pianist for his own works, such as his 1990 Piano Quintet and his immensely popular Sonata for Flute and Piano. He’ll also be discussing his music, including his upcoming opera version of Nathanael West’s Miss Lonelyhearts, which is due to premiere at Juilliard in April. (West’s novel is a promising subject for operatic treatment, and Liebermann figures to be on sure footing, having composed one opera already in The Picture of Dorian Grey.) His piano works have been heard here, frequently through the Van Cliburn Competition, but this evening represents a chance to hear from the man directly.
