Super Furry Animals

By Vic Drabicky

Rock music has become predictable and pretty straightforward. Either a band is so normal it stinks (e.g. Creed) or it’s so weird that novelty makes up for actual talent (e.g. Bloodhound Gang). But every once in a while, a band comes along that is just weird enough to be interesting and just strait laced enough to catch mainstream music fans’ eyes — and ears.

Enter: Super Furry Animals. If the name, cartoon-covered guitars, abstractly scary web site, and unique costumes don’t let on to the band’s oddness, then its brand of techno- political- pop-’70s-guitar rock surely will.

From their self-proclaimed anthem, “The Man Don’t Give a Fuck,” to their interestingly constructed and titled, “Ice Hockey Hair,” their lyrics make it clear that Super Furry Animals think differently than the majority of musicians — not to mention the majority of people.

The U.K.-based quintet’s sound is surprisingly catchy and somewhat “normal.” While their get-up grabs your attention, their shiny, Beach-Boyish music will more than likely keep you listening. After hearing their latest, Rings Around the World, you’ll probably marvel at how much lead singer Gruff Rhys sounds like the Beach Boy himself, Brian Wilson. But by indulging in his own vocal tics, Rhys pretty much makes it clear that he’s no dime-store rip-off but an original himself.

The problem with “experiencing” Super Furry Animals is that you can become distracted by their weirdness. That’s a shame, because they’re one of the most inspired and inspiring bands out there.

Super Furry Animals, 9pm Fri. Gypsy Tea Room, 2548 Elm St, Dallas. $10. 214-74-GYPSY.
