Red Animal War

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned Texas head-stomping to greet the weekend, as local noise merchants Red Animal War polish up their boots. In support of its latest release Polizida (produced by ex-Jawbox volumizer J. Robbins), the band will be throwing a fandango at the loudest drinking hole in town. Much like RAW’s brethren in Brutal Juice, Drive Like Jehu, and Fugazi, the Dallas quartet focuses on shifting guitar hooks and a plowing rhythm section harnessed by Justin Wilson’s sandpaper vocals that go from tortuous twists to crawling behemoths.

Slowride’s also on the bill. A band that lays down the same kind of hook-laden devastation, they should be able to whip up a fury of devil horns and hell-yeah’s. Often mixing punks’s harder, faster rules with hard rock’s bulldozing sensibilities, Slowride is the left hook to Red Animal War’s uppercut; the Bash Brothers armed and loaded with Gibson Les Pauls and Marshall cabinets.

Ex-My Spacecoaster psychedelic pilot John Lamonica will also be on hand, performing the goods from his Tiebreaker project that is due Sept. 28 from Spune Records.

Though success is not always in the cards for the rock sect in Fort Worth-Dallas, this bill proves that there’s no quit in the “cult of heavy.” — Justin Press

Fri with Slowride and John Lamonica at The Wreck Room, 3208 W 7th St, FW. 817-348-8303.
