Favez
(from lausanne, switzerland)\r\n(Doghouse Records)\r\n
By PJ Gach
Ah, Switzerland. Land of chocolate, watches, and hills alive with the music of Favez. Well, not quite, but the band is the country’s most famous indie rock outfit.
(from lausanne, switzerland) is Favez’s third outing, and what a dark and brooding masterpiece it is. The guitars are crunchy yet elegantly precise in their throbbing timbres. The lyrics are delivered in a non-linear fashion, shiny pebbles of poetry strewn about randomly.
The band combines the emotive plaint of The Smithereens with a dash of nu-metal urgency. You could call them “emo” or “alternative” or “indie.” Whatever label, they remain a very tight, guitar-driven band with lyrics that paint visions for your ears.
One stand-out is “Don’t Let The Riot In,” which is built on a strong rhythmic hook and haiku lyrics. Another, “Chasing Honesty,” is a broody little number that crackles with intensity. The last cut on the disc, “Troubled Life Blues,” depends on a melancholy harmonica for atmosphere; the instrument weaves its way in and out of the guitar riffs. The song is not blues in the traditional 12-bar sense — it’s the blues of the heart, of rock in which the beat may be 4/4 but the reality is as sharp and clear as any blues excursion.
