Juneteenth Celebrations

Across much of Fort Worth this weekend, celebrations will be held in commemoration of the day 140 years ago when Union troops entered Galveston and told the slaves there they had been freed — two years earlier, technically — by the Emancipation Proclamation.

The city’s official Juneteenth celebration takes place Saturday, near the Fort Worth Convention Center, from 10am ’til 7pm. Activities include games, bounce houses, and a dunking booth. There will also be food and music.

Of the myriad smaller celebrations happening throughout town, a couple stand out. Last year’s inaugural Evansfest Juneteenth Celebration was a major success, attracting more than 30 vendors and 7,500 partiers. Cause for celebration was not only Juneteenth but also the completion of Evans Avenue Plaza. This year’s celebration is on Saturday and Sunday, beginning both days at 3pm. Performers include Darrell and Tonya Blair, Reginald Wright & Company, Baker Chapel AME Church, Fingerprints, and everyone’s favorite smooth R&B gent, Linny Nance. No alcohol, pets, weapons, or coolers allowed. Admission and parking are free. The location is Evans Plaza, at Evans Av and Terrell St.

Feel like celebrating Juneteenth in a different, sweatier way? Then sign up for the 5K run/walk, leaving from the Juneteenth Museum (901 E Rosedale Av, at Evans Av), at 7pm, on Saturday. For more information, contact Jeph Abara, at 817-265-4578 or jephaa@yahoo.com.
