No doubt about it: Scott Copeland’s a character. Singer-songwriter, ex-football jock (his dad’s a coach), devotee of Dylan and Willie, he tells stories laced with droll humor in the bluesy, boozy voice of a phlegmatic Everyman. No hiding behind a Persona for this ol’ boy. Listening to songs like “Goin’ Insane Blues,” “Hard-Livin Easy-Lovin Man,” and “Paint it Gray,” you get the impression that with Scott, what you hear is what you get.
A few weeks ago, Copeland and a score of friends and fans gathered at the Wreck Room to watch the debut of filmmaker Chris Connelly’s documentary portrait of the singer, on a segment of the Community Cable TV series West Side Stories. Connelly captured Scott hanging around at home and at Fred’s Café, going to class, and performing solo at the Lazy Armadillo and with Woodeye’s Carey Wolfe at the Ridglea Theater Lounge.
Copeland now disavows an earlier c.d. release, recorded with an unsympathetic producer. Good news for his fans: This disc, produced by the singer with Scott Boland, does a better job of capturing the laid-back, organic vibe of his live performances. Boland and fiddler Chris Booker provide sympathetic accompaniment; Boland’s guitar, dobro, and mandolin are particularly fine. Copeland’s buds Jerry Elmore, Andy Pate, and Damon Tope furnish vocal harmonies.
In fact, the only part of the Total Scott Experience that’s missing from this disc is the singer hitting the audience up for tips. No matter. Pop open a cold one, stick this in the player, and remember to put an extra buck in the jar next time you see him.
