Cop Rock

The anecdotal evidence is everywhere: Cops disguised as homeless men, hanging out on street corners in the cultural district, waiting to pounce on drivers who aren’t wearing seatbelts; cops running license plates at stop lights; cops covering the cultural district and W Berry on random weekday nights. There’s some sort of crackdown going on, and HearSay isn’t going down without a fight. Of course, your columnist is all for putting an end to drunk driving (if, indeed, that’s what the increased police presence around these club areas is there for). What HearSay isn’t for is police intimidation. An entertainment district is, by nature, a place for people to chill. Sure, there’s the occasional fight, but of all the locales in Fort Worth where the most hospitable, friendly people hang out, the areas of W Berry and W Seventh are two of the best. The moral of the story: You can continue partying like it’s 2002 on W Berry and W Seventh (HearSay will) — just be careful.

Local Roundup

HearSay’s new favorite band is Darth Vato — even though your writer has yet to hear their music. Their web site fills HearSay with joy and laughter. Here’s a sample DV “bio sheet,” of the subliminal kind: “Here at Darth Vato (sloppy reggae band) we try to play music that people can dance to (Humpty Dance), and we are always on the lookout for new shows at major venues (a frat party or mixer). Typically we play for fun (cash money) and excitement (free beer), but we are always up for new incentives (hot chicks).” Greatness, no? The music, reportedly, is reggae with a little funk thrown in for good measure. The band plays Scooner’s this Sat (June 21) ... Saw on www.bizbuysell.com the other day an anonymous listing for a “west side bar and grill” going for, a-hem, $115,000 (which doesn’t include the property — the lease will run you an additional $1,500/month). The place is also, by the description included in the ad details, a live music venue and a small restaurant (with a dining patio). Now anyone who’s spent any time in the cultural district/West Side knows the place we’re talking about here; HearSay’s disinclined to blab out of respect for the advertiser’s wishes to remain unnamed. The point is, no one with a brain would dare make an offer for this place — unless he or she were a big wig for a chain bar/restaurant. And that would suck. The best part about the west side is that it’s been largely immune to chain-bar/restaurant infection. What west-siders do not need is a chain bar/restaurant, coming into the neighborhood with its ready-made décor and big promotional bucks, attracting Fort Worth’s riff-raff. The only thing to do here is take a page out of Hammer’s good book and pray.
