Driving School Follies

Shtickmen is a locally made “mockumentary” film that’s seeking a distribution deal and is screening at the Rave Motion Pictures Ridgmar theater this Thursday, but that’s hardly its only notable quality.
For one thing, it’s the first in a series of movies being brought to us by Filmfrog Productions. The organization, founded by TCU alumnus Brendan Jones, has taken up the mission of screening North Texas-made films on a monthly basis, rather than confine such movies to festivals and workshops. Filmfrog has been showing movies in Dallas under the name of the Dallas Film Series since 2003, and this will be the inaugural showing of the Fort Worth Film Series.
Also, Shtickmen co-stars Four Day Weekend stalwart David Wilk as an obnoxious, joke-stealing comedian who is the archenemy of the main character (Dean Lewis), a comic who teaches defensive driving classes and whose professional struggles are captured by a bad documentary filmmaker (Johnny Krastenberg). Fellow Four Day Weekender Oliver Tull also shows up, as does “Buff Tanner,” author of a parody of self-help books that made us laugh a few years back.
Finally, the proceeds of the evening go toward the tsunami relief effort. Besides raising awareness of local filmmakers, the Fort Worth Film Series will raise money for nonprofit organizations doing good work here and around the world. That means there’s every reason to get behind this fledgling series.
Shtickmen screens at 7:30pm Thu at Rave Motion Pictures Ridgmar Mall, 2300 Green Oaks Blvd, FW. Tickets are $5. Call 214-498-2238.
