The Classics Go Caribbean
So how often do you hear steel drums at a classical music concert? You’ll have the chance at the TCU Latin American Music Festival, which gets into full swing this week. The steel drums are part of a full performance of Glenn McClure’s St. Francis in the Americas: A Caribbean Mass, a 1997 work whose “Kyrie” is already proving to be a popular excerpt at concerts.
The rest of the music on the schedule is no less promising. Friday evening offers up the world premiere of the Triple Concerto by Mexican composer Samuel Zyman, featuring TCU professors on violin, cello, and piano as soloists. Saturday’s concert boasts the Cuban-born composer Alfredo Rolando Ortiz performing as a soloist on South American Suite, his own piece for harp and orchestra that’s divided into sections paying tribute to the music of Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Paraguay. He’ll be playing on a Paraguayan harp, made from unpainted wood and nylon strings.
In addition, panel discussions with Latin American composers will examine the state of classical music in the region, with particular emphasis on Central America and the Caribbean. Going on its fourth biannual outing, the festival looks to be larger than ever, but the proof of whether it’s better will surely be in the music.
