People of Scottish extraction are likely to be in a bad mood right about now, what with the World Cup soccer tournament going on. Scotland failed to get past beatable Croatian and Belgian teams in the qualifying rounds, and performed dismally in exhibition matches against quality opponents. (They were on the wrong side of a 5-0 skunking by the French.) Scots around here can get their minds off football with the 16th annual Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games. The Arlington event includes Scottish music, dance, food, and games of all sorts, including a golf tournament and a bagpiping competition.
However, if you prefer wearing a Stetson to a tam o’shanter, then you should drop in on the grand opening celebration for the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. The new facility in Fort Worth’s Cultural District was designed by the same architectural firm that did Bass Performance Hall and the Ballpark in Arlington. It includes a multipurpose theater, a research library, a grand rotunda, and three galleries that showcase 158 inductees and the parts of western history that they represent. A parade kicks off the celebration on Saturday morning, and the building opens its doors to the public at noon on Sunday. Whether your taste runs to trick riding or Celtic fiddling, this is your weekend.
