Bad Art Show
The word “bad” in German means “bath,” and since the 19th century, German towns that have discovered mineral springs have added the word “Bad” to their names to promote themselves as towns where people can get mineral baths. Bad Münder, Bad Godesborg, and Baden-Baden are some of the more famous ones. (In Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, one imaginary town is called Bad Karma.) The tiny town of Bad Königshofen is a sister city to Arlington, and this weekend, their artists come to Arlington Museum of Art.
The show, entitled The Bridge, includes the building of a collaborative sculpture in Gene Allen Park, but the main show is at AMA. Eva Luna Warmuth, who has built a straw bale house on her farm in Germany, installs a throne made of straw bales here in addition to her other sculptures. Peter Picciani will have sculptures and wood carvings that reflect his recent interest in genetics research. Fritz Toennieshen contributes his landscape paintings, and Christine Wehe-Bamberger showcases her installations and conceptual art, which often utilize textiles. These artists join our own Benito Huerta, Celia Munoz, and Nicholas Wood in a celebration of the power of art to foster peace and understanding among cultures.
