Flickerstick has signed with Idol Records. The Dallas-based indie label’s roster boasts bands like [daryl], the pAper chAse, the multi-platinum Sponge, and was formerly home to the Old 97’s, Baboon, Centro-matic, and The Fags — who just signed with major label Warner Bros. Label honcho Erv Karwelis wouldn’t discuss terms of the Flick contract but said that Idol will release the band’s forthcoming full-length Tarantula, produced by Keith Cleversley (Flaming Lips, Urge Overkill, Mercury Rev), on Oct. 5. Said frontman Brandin Lea: “We’re excited to be part of Idol Records.”
The deal is win-win for both. The 11-year-old operation gets another great local band, while the boys in Flickerstick finally get the support that’s eluded them forever. The one thing for Lea that made Idol the choice over a few other labels was Karwelis’ enthusiasm for the record. Said Lea: “The album’s a year behind schedule. ... Getting the record to our fans is more important than waiting around for a major label deal and getting [the record] stalled for another year.” Like any major label, Idol is equipped to handle just about anything — from distributing records internationally to maintaining a strong internet presence to promoting the hell out of stuff. Idol also functions on a level that full-time musicians can appreciate. “It’s nice to have people you can call directly on the phone and discuss your career,” said Lea. “You don’t have to wait a month for a call back, like you do with a major label.” The boys will tour from early fall to early winter, when they’ll go back into the studio to record another full-length. The possible single from Tarantula is a rabble-rouser that the band’s been playing at shows over the past year, “Teenage Dope Fiend.” ... Speaking of drug abuse, the JustCause single “My Addiction” will be heard ’round the country this weekend on “Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Countdown.” No, the song’s not a hit (yet). It’s part of a feature segment in which “uncharted” bands get to show their stuff. The song will also be up on the show’s web site for a week. Check www.rick.com for more info. Big props to JC — and Fort Worth rock. ... Those of you holding your breath for a new Briley c.d., don’t give up yet. From the band’s web site: “Well, its seems we weren’t meant to record a c.d. Once again, we ran into trouble this past month when trying to get some studio time in. Problems, problems, problems. Our plan now is for sometime in August.” Looking for a Briley fix? Then see ’em Sat., at Andy’s Basement (122 N. Locust St.), in Denton. Said the Bril-sters: “We’ll totally shake your hand if you come.” ... Now here’s a band looking for ... a band. After HearSay raved about the Mockingbird Cartel last week, the band kinda broke up. We say “kinda” because its two core members — Cadillac Fraf and Linc Campbell — are still working together.
