Raising the Curtain

A great many people have a great deal of affection for Summer of ’42, Robert Mulligan’s 1971 movie about a 15-year-old boy who falls in love one summer with a beautiful older woman (by about 10 years) who’s married to a man fighting in World War II. The movie’s easy nostalgia and sympathetic portrayal of awkward adolescence was catnip for moviegoers who came of age around that time.

The stage musical adaptation of this film, with book by Hunter Foster and songs by David Kirshenbaum (who makes extensive use of the 1940s big band/swing idiom), goes onstage this weekend amid a flurry of firsts. It’s the first-ever production of this musical in the Metroplex, it’s the first show to go on at the newly renovated Casa Mañana Theatre, and it’s the first installment of the theater’s Silver Dome Series, which will bring several regional premieres of dramas, comedies, and musicals to Fort Worth over the next few months. To top it off, the female lead in this production is no less than the brilliant Rachel York, who has won raves on Broadway for her performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Kiss Me, Kate, and — most notably — Victor/Victoria. If you’re going to start something new in Fort Worth’s theater scene, you might as well make a big splash doing it.

Summer of ‘42 runs thru Sun at Casa Mañana, 3101 W Lancaster Av, FW. Tickets are $23-60. Call 817-332-2272.
