Little Green Men

Music snobs: Gotta love ’em.
Especially metal music snobs — you know, those cooler-than-thou ’heads who only listen to music that involves guttural screams, double-bass rolls, and testosterone. To these folks, only 100 percent, Grade-A sonic castor oil works. Anything less is for pansies.
But loud and obnoxious isn’t the only way to play tough. Being original — even if that means mixing hardcore with glam with death with (gasp!) pop — is.
North Texas’ Little Green Men aren’t afraid to experiment with different metal sub-genres. The Men go from funkified Primus to piercingly loud Cradle of Filth to mellifluous Metallica while managing to sound less like the aforementioned bands and more like, well, Little Green Men.
LGM has been gigging for a while, more frequently than normal these days, in support of Supernova. At 10 tracks, the record — save for some referential blues-inflected moments — funks/rocks/thrashes effectively.
From their beginnings in the early 1990s as a Rush/Dream Theater/early-’80s metal cover outfit (always cool), Little Green Men have cut two full-lengths (Encounters, No Intelligent Life) and have toured most of Texas. A little on the dorky side, the group still deserves praise for remaining more interested in exploring their influences, tastes, and ideas than living up to somebody else’s ideals. Music snobs, phone home.
