Reminiscing With the Local Round-Up
First, HearSay was remiss in thanking shitloads of people for helping pull off a great Spring Rally two weekends ago but not tipping the brim to Ricky Chewning of the event organizers/promoters 3-Day Pass. Hey, Ricky. Thanks. Second, happy birthday to the Wreck Room. The West Seventh Street institution turned eight this past Sunday. Congrats also to the Fort Worth-related winners in this past week’s Dallas Observer Music Awards. Former Toadies frontman Vaden Todd Lewis and his Burden Brothers won about 200 awards in various categories (except probably Best Rap), while Flickerstick’s first full-length in nearly an eon, Tarantula, took home the biggie, Album of the Year. On the night of the victory, last Tuesday, HearSay ran into Flickerstick bassist (and recent father again — congrats), Fletcher Lea. A little kicked in the ass, Lea was nonetheless supremely jazzed over the honor. What was mildly upsetting to HearSay was the fact that each time Lea expressed any form of exultation over the win — like, say, an unprovoked “whoo-hoo!” — he also apologized. Hey, Fletch. WTF?! After all the shit Flickerstick’s caught over the years, you have every right to walk into a club and not only “whoo-hoo!” your ass off but demand an alcoholic beverage from everybody inside. You’ve earned it. Even funnier, though, when looking at the big Flickerstick triumph is that previously indifferent scenesters began singing the album’s praises to HearSay not long after news spread. Hey, all you Flickerstick haters. I know who you are, and while I love (most of) you, I don’t mind your switching boats of opinion in mid-stream. I’m sure Fletch doesn’t mind, either. ... Though unrelated to Fort Worth proper but still integral to the North Texas music scene, Eisley — whose co-lead singers Sherri and Stacy DuPree won for best female vocalist(s) — is performing in Dallas as part of an extensive tour with mega-label sweethearts New Found Glory. The show is Saturday, with Reggie & The Full Effect and Josh Owen, at the Gypsy Tea Room, 2548 Elm St., Dallas. (For more info, call 214-74-GYPSY.) ... While out and about this weekend, don’t forget two other live music options. The Acoustic Mafia continues soldiering on, threatening the three-year mark, on Thursday, at — where else? — the Aardvark (2905 W. Berry St.; 817-926-7814). And, on the complete opposite end of “Truly Cool” on the music spectrum, Taste of Addison is happening this weekend at Addison Circle Park (15650 Addison Rd.; 972-450-2851). On a bill that includes Sister Hazel and grossly underrated saccharine dance-pop giants Smash Mouth is the Little River Band. The significance of HearSay’s mentioning this ’70s-era lite-rock tragedy is that, as a burgeoning karaoke star years ago, HearSay’s signature tune was — awww, yeah! — “Reminiscing.” ... Lastly, HearSay wants to send a big hug and kiss to the newest — and coolest — addition to the Fort Worth music scene, River Welton Price. The son of Lindsay Fillingim and singer-songwriter and dear friend John Price was born on May 3, and unlike his lovable father 24/7, River was preternaturally quiet on his grand entrance. (Gotcha, dude.)
