Cee-Lo, Musiq Soulchild

In the unlikely event that you haven’t yet heard of Cee-Lo, even though he’s been on just about every late-night talk show recently, you can rest assured that you’ve heard of his friends.
He’s basically one big second banana. He has guested with everyone from OutKast to Goodie Mob, from Lauryn Hill to Santana. A solo album seemed like a next logical progression. So now we have Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections.
Popping up in choir robes and with a horn section to make George Clinton green with envy, Cee-Lo rides a trail of funk into otherwise remote hip-hop funk territory. The man has soul, the man has funk, the man has rhymes, and the man has a voice. Which is not to say he’s all one-dimensional; Imperfections is a serving of a variety of musical styles, from rhythmic horn play to slow, jazzy balladry. His emotional, torn, high-pitched voice works well in nearly every setting.
What with the Blink-182/Green Day show on everybody’s mind, it may seem that Fort Worth-Dallas is all about moshing. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but this month, when Cee-Lo plays Dallas, a good idea may be to just kick back, get your groove on, and let the heavenly voice and bass-ic sounds of Cee-Lo take you away from whatever it is you need to be rescued from.
