The Show
You know when you’re at one of those multi-multi-bills lousy with talented yet mostly similar-sounding acts, and you’re sitting there, sipping your beer, thinking you’re richer, smarter, and funnier than you actually are, and then this band gets on stage and totally blows your flippin’ head off? Yeah, that’s kinda the feeling that most of us scenesters got from not one, not two, not three, but, like, 10 recent multi-band shows on which Radiant’s played. These boys are that good.
The onslaught begins subtly. The appearance of four young-ish, relatively thin white men wearing tweed (or if not tweed, something else equally professorial) isn’t exactly intimidating, especially when one of the guys is seated at an electric piano. (Nerd.) Then there’s the arranging and rearranging of instruments and mics. And then. The music — bright, echoey, somber, joyous, smooth, crunchy, smart, fun indie rock. Two words: In. Tense.
Ain’t a thing feigned about these musos. Nothing pre-meditated. They’re just so sincere that irony — and all of its attendant foppery and folly — takes a hike. The band’s been laying low recently, still pushing The Sound of Splitting Atoms e.p. and playing locally whenever. See them this weekend, but be forewarned: Heads are gonna roll.
Most likely, yours.
